This ranking is not a great indicator of my favorite golf courses, since most of the top courses in this category are courses where all of the holes are consistently boring. But it is an interesting way to capture the range of golf holes at a course, especially courses that I generally like but that have a few holes that I really do not enjoy.

For the most part, courses with extremely tight ranges are courses where all of the holes are consistently boring with fairly low rankings. However, courses that I like that sneak on this top end of this list have a collection of consistently good golf holes, which is very impressive. A more interesting thing to look at is at the "Bottom 20" list, which reflects golf courses that are either really neat with one poorly ranked hole, or mostly meh with one awesome hole.

This statistic calculates the ranking difference between the average of the best 6 holes and the average of the worst 6 holes at each course. It is an extension of the ranking above with a slightly larger sample size. For the most part, courses with extremely tight ranges are courses where all of the holes are consistently boring with fairly low rankings. In addition, unfortunately with this ranking 9 hole courses or courses where I've played less than 18 holes are more likely to appear at the top, which makes this statistic not incredibly significant. The bottom 20 ranking is still interesting to look at, because it reflects mostly above-average courses that have some volatility between their best and worst golf holes.

The bottom 20 list is more interesting to look at, as courses at the bottom of this ranking have one hole that really stands out relative to the rest of the course.

Best Outlier (By Difference from Mean)

This statistic calculates the largest positive outlier for each course based the raw difference from the mean. This is similar to the other outlier ranking above, but it better accentuates courses with either a really good hole or a really bad hole. For the standard deviation ranking above, a course might have 17 holes that are all ranked very poorly and one hole that is ranked averagely, and the outlier by standard deviation would be significant. For that same course, that outlier would be less significant if the raw difference from the mean were calculated, since there is not a huge difference in the rankings between bad and average holes.

Worst Outlier (By Difference from Mean)

This statistic calculates the largest negative outlier for each course based on the raw difference from the mean. This is more effective for identifying any egregious outliers among the best courses than the standard deviation statistic above. For example, Cape Wickham ranks last in the worst outlier by standard deviation statistic. However, its worst hole is not actually a bad golf hole, the course just has such a large grouping of really strong golf holes that the one average hole really stands out. When calculated by difference from mean, Cape Wickham only ranks 113.
