STRETCHES OF HOLES

The Highland Course at Primland Hole 1 to Hole 2

The first hole at Primland is a dogleg right par 5 that tumbles town a crazy hill to an awesome green complex that is backed by a drop off into the deep valley below.  The hole is a blast to play, has outstanding land movement, and is aesthetically severe but beautiful. (Pictured below)

The second hole at Primland is a downhill par 3 with the valley to the right and another great green complex (I unfortunately do not have a picture of this hole).

Cape Kidnappers Hole 6 to Hole 7

The 6th hole at Cape Kidnappers is a thrilling long (225 yard) cliffside par 3 with spectacular ocean and cliff views to the left.  Even with the crazy scenery, the green complex might be the star of the hole.  The green is large with some wild but fun slopes, especially to a front left pin in the bowl.  There is also fairway short right that banks forward and left to the green to allow for a low running shot.  The hole is beautiful, fun, and challenging (first picture below).

The 7th hole is a spectacular inland par 4 that is my favorite hole on the course, even with all of the cliffside holes to come.  The tee shot dips downhill to a fairway lying in a chute between a couple of mounds.  A well-struck drive can reach the speed slot which tumbles the ball down to a wedge distance.  The approach shot is to one of my favorite green complexes I've played, a small green pitched severely back to front with a severe false front and runoffs on all sides.  This is one of my favorite holes of all time (second picture below).

Royal Melbourne (West) Hole 5 to Hole 6

The 5th hole at Royal Melbourne (West) is one of my favorite par 3s that I've ever played.  It was a hole that I had very high expectations of going into the round and I already knew a lot about it, but when I got to the tee box it still made me say "Wow".  It is a relatively flat inland par 3 that still somehow manages to be one of the most striking holes that I've ever seen, and it is fantastic to play as well. (Pictured below)

The 6th hole is a strong dogleg right par 4.  The tee shot is interesting and challenges you to take off more of the dogleg to leave a shorter second shot, but this comes with increased risk.  The real intrigue of the hole comes on the approach shot to an elevated green benched into the hillside with a deep bunker front left and a severe false front. (I unfortunately do not have a picture of this hole)

IMG_6974.HEIC
Barnbougle (Dunes) Hole 4 to Hole 5

The 4th hole at Barnbougle (Dunes) is a fantastic driveable par 4 over a large blowout bunker on the right side of the fairway.  The green is tucked in front of large dunes and has great contouring. (first picture below)

The 5th hole at Barnbougle is a long par 3 with the ocean down the left.  It is an aesthetically striking hole, but the design of the hole is also very interesting, with a huge bunker well short of the green that obscures most of the green surface and great short grass surrounds around the green. (second picture below)

Marquette (Greywalls) Hole 6 to Hole 7

The 6th hole at Greywalls is a longer par 3 to a green bordered by a large rock wall to the right and a severe false front short.  The hole is extremely rugged and is a pretty outrageous golf hole to play.  (first picture below)

The 7th hole is one of the most striking golf holes that I've ever played, and while it is an extremely challenging hole that probably cannot really be tackled by strategy, it is extremely fun to play.  The raised right side of the fairway is much wider than the lower left portion, but a drive anywhere in play is solid.  The hole then goes downhill to a severe green complex with a runoff to the right and some very interesting short game shots. (second picture below)

Giants Ridge (Quarry) Hole 12 to Hole 13

The 12th hole at the Quarry at Giants Ridge is a strong downhill par 4 with a large, deep waste bunker down the left side.  The fairway narrows after the the waste bunker ends down to a really spectacular green complex with excellent contouring and short grass runoffs everywhere.  (I unfortunately do not have a picture of this hole)

The 13th hole at the Quarry at Giants Ridge is a driveable downhill par 4 with tons of options.  the green is almost as wide as the entire playing corridor and is very reachable with driver.  The fairway is split by a bunker, and a layup down the wider right side is safer but one down the elevated left side leaves a better view of the green for the approach shot.

Barnbougle (Dunes) Hole 3 to Hole 5

Holes 4 and 5 were already covered in the two-hole stretch writeup above.  Hole 3 is another fantastic hole.  It is a dogleg right par 4 with the tee shot partially obscured by dunes.  It is a little visually deceptive how far right the tee shot can go.  The green is one of my favorites I've ever played.  It is small with very subtle slopes and a gentle front to back tilt, but it requires a lot of thought to get the ball close to the hole, especially when hitting from the rough. (Pictures are Hole 3, Hole 4, Hole 5).

Tot Hill Farm Hole 1 to Hole 3

Tot Hill Farm has the most electric start to a round of golf that I've seen.  The 1st hole is a crazy downhill par 4 from a severely elevated tee box.  The landing area is semi-blind due to a large mound on the left side of the hole.  The approach shot is to a green with a huge bumper to the right and a dropoff to a creek left.

The second hole is a beautiful par 4 to an extremely wide fairway sloping left to right.  The hole goes up and over a little mound and banks downhill to the left up to a green tucked in a low point between a creek and the woods.

The third hole is aptly named "The Rock" due to a huge boulder next to the tee box.  It is a downhill par 3 to a huge green with severe slopes, massive bunkering to the right, and a creek wrapping around the front and left of the green.

The Wilderness at Fortune Bay Hole 3 to Hole 5

This stretch of holes is one that I think about a lot, and as I was playing the course I said to msyelf that I thought the first 8 holes was the best 8 hole stretch of golf that I've ever seen.  It is cool to see that my rankings actually back up these thoughts.

The 3rd hole is a beautiful long par 3 to a somewhat oddly shaped two tier green over a pond in front of a stunning treeline.  When I played this hole, it was straight back into the wind and was an absolute bear.

The 4th hole is a brilliant par 4 with a fairway split by a line of rocks.  The lower left fairway is wider and cuts off about 250 yards from the tee.  The higher right fairway rewards an aggressive play with driver and kicks right to left toward the green but brings in additional risk.  The green complex is bowled and offers several opportunities to utilize sideslopes and backstops.

The 5th hole is a shorter dogleg right par 4 through a tight treeline, but the hole is short enough where the narrowness makes sense.  The green is not visible from the tee, but once you round the corner of the dogleg a really cool Biarritz green is revealed.

Marquette (Greywalls) Hole 5 to Hole 7

The 6th and 7th hole at Greywalls were already covered in the best two hole stretches above.

The 5th hole at Greywalls is a driveable par 4 with a blind tee shot over a crest in the hill.  The two-tiered green is bordered by a 20 foot rock wall to the left and interesting short grass areas elsewhere.

Pinehurst No. 2 Hole 3 to Hole 5

The 3rd hole at Pinehurst No. 2 is a brilliant short par 4.  The tee shot can be aggressively pushed up closer to the green or laid back in the 220 yard range from the tee, but the approach shot to the green is the most interesting part of the hole.  Long is dead, and there are some awesome contours and runoffs.

The 4th hole is a strong downhill dogleg left par 4 with the fairway pitched opposite the dogleg.  There is a bunker right of the fairway and waste area elsewhere, with a long approach to a large green with runoffs to short grass.

The 5th hole is a reachable dogleg left par 5 with the fairway also pitched right to left.  The green complex is awesome, with a severe dropoff short left, a collection area long that still leaves a difficult shot, and a great view back down the fairway. (I unfortunately do not have a picture of this hole)
